Set Up SafePassVpn
Getting connected takes about a minute, and the free plan doesn't need an account:
- Install SafePassVpn from the Google Play Store
- Open the app and tap the large power button
- Android asks for permission to set up a VPN connection the first time. Tap OK
- The app shows Protected, and a key icon appears in the status bar while the VPN is on
To confirm it's working, compare your address on our IP checker with the VPN off and on. It should change to the VPN server's IP.
Find the VPN Settings on Vivo
SettingsOther networks and connectionsVPN
Funtouch OS keeps VPN with Airplane mode, Personal Hotspot and Private DNS rather than under Wi-Fi or Mobile network. The VPN screen lists every VPN app you've connected under Personal VPNs, and the active one says Connected. In Settings, SafePassVpn is listed as Safepass Vpn.

Stop the VPN Being Closed in the Background
Most "my VPN keeps disconnecting" problems on Vivo phones come from battery saving, not from the VPN. Funtouch OS pauses background apps to save power, and a VPN is a background app. These settings tell the phone to leave it running:
1. Allow high background power use
SettingsBatteryHigh background power consumptionSafepass Vpn
This is the switch that matters most on Vivo. The screen (titled High background battery usage) lists every app with a switch, and they're off unless you turn them on. With the switch off, Funtouch OS can stop an app that keeps working in the background, which is exactly what a VPN does. Turn it on for Safepass Vpn. A VPN uses very little power while idle, so this won't noticeably affect your battery.

2. Allow Autostart
SettingsApplications and PermissionsPermission managementAutostartSafepass Vpn
Autostart lets an app start after the phone restarts and wake up in the background. Funtouch OS leaves it off for new apps and only lets 10 apps autostart at once, so if the switch won't turn on, turn off an app you don't need first. The same Autostart list is in the i Manager app under App manager → Permission management.

3. Check the app can use mobile data and Wi-Fi
SettingsApplications and PermissionsApp managerSafepass VpnData usage
Under Network management, Funtouch OS has a separate switch for mobile data (shown with your carrier's name) and for Wi-Fi, for every app. Both were on for SafePassVpn on our phone, but if the VPN connects on Wi-Fi and fails on mobile data, or the other way round, check these two switches.
Turn On Always-on VPN
Always-on VPN is built into Android. It starts the VPN as soon as the phone boots and reconnects it when you switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
On our Vivo Y15 (Funtouch OS 9, Android 11), Always-on VPN isn't available: the VPN screen has no settings icon next to SafePassVpn, and tapping it only offers to disconnect. That's why the Autostart and High background power consumption settings above matter more on Vivo than on most phones; together they let SafePassVpn keep running and start again after a restart. Newer Funtouch OS and OriginOS versions may add a settings icon next to the VPN. If yours has one, tap it and turn on Always-on VPN.

Common Vivo VPN Problems
Autostart won't turn on
Funtouch OS lets only 10 apps autostart. When the limit is reached, turn off Autostart for an app you rarely use, then turn it on for SafePassVpn.
The VPN stops in Super power-saving mode
Super power-saving mode only lets Contacts, Phone, Messages and Clock run, so the VPN can't stay connected. Switch back to Normal mode under Settings → Battery when you need the VPN. Low power mode is milder: it lowers performance and screen brightness and turns off Personal Hotspot.
Another VPN app takes over
Android only allows one VPN at a time. If you have more than one VPN app installed, connecting one disconnects the other. The VPN screen shows which one says Connected.
Sites won't load only while connected
If you set Private DNS to a custom provider, it can clash with the VPN's own DNS. Set it back to Off or Automatic under Settings → Other networks and connections → Private DNS, then reconnect.

Choose Which Apps Use the VPN
Some apps, like banking apps or games, can work better on your normal connection. With Premium, SafePassVpn's Split tunnel setting lets you pick which apps go through the VPN and which connect directly, so you can leave the VPN on all day. Read more in our split tunneling guide, or compare plans.
How We Tested
Every path and screenshot in this guide comes from a Vivo Y15 (model 1901) running Funtouch OS 9, Android 11, checked in October 2026. Menu names can differ slightly between models, regions and carrier versions; if a setting isn't where we say, use the search box at the top of Settings. New to VPNs?
