What Is My IP Address?
Your public IP address, internet provider and approximate location, as every website sees them
Finding your IP address…
What Is an IP Address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is the number that identifies a connection on the internet, so data knows where to go. Your internet provider gives your home or phone connection a public IP address, and every website, app and game server you connect to sees it. That's the address at the top of this page.
Inside your home, your router gives each device a private (local) IP address, such as 192.168.1.23. Private addresses only work on your own network, so websites never see them. All your devices share the router's one public address.
There are two versions. IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.45 and are running out, so many providers also give you an IPv6 address, which looks like 2001:db8:85a3::8a2e:370:7334. If your connection has both, websites may see either one, which is why we show both.
How to Find Your IP Address on Any Device
Your device settings show its private address. For your public IP, open this page on that device.
iPhone and iPad
Open Settings → Wi-Fi and tap the (i) next to your network. The IP Address shown there is your local address. On mobile data, iOS doesn't show it, so use this page.
Android
Open Settings → Network & internet → Internet (on Samsung: Connections → Wi-Fi) and tap the gear next to your network. You can also find it under Settings → About phone → Status. Menu names vary by brand.
Windows
Open Settings → Network & internet, choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then open your network's properties and look for IPv4 address. Or open Command Prompt and type ipconfig.
Mac
Open System Settings → Wi-Fi, click Details next to your network, then TCP/IP. Or open Terminal and type ipconfig getifaddr en0.
Smart TV and streaming stick
Look under Settings → Network (sometimes General → Network or About) for Network status or Connection info. The IP listed is the TV's local address.
Router
Your router's own address is the Default Gateway in ipconfig, or Router on an iPhone's Wi-Fi details (often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1). Its internet-facing (WAN) address is normally the public IP at the top of this page.
What Your IP Address Reveals
Anyone who sees your IP can look up your internet provider and your approximate location, usually the city or region. It doesn't show your street address or name. Only your provider can link the address to your account, and it keeps records of who had which address and when.
Advertisers and data brokers combine your IP with cookies and other signals to recognise you across sites. On public Wi-Fi, everyone on the network shares one address, and the network owner can see which sites each device connects to.
How to Hide or Change Your IP Address
- Use a VPN. Websites see the VPN server's address instead of yours, and your traffic is encrypted on the way. This is the only option here that also hides your activity from your provider and the Wi-Fi network.
- Switch networks. Moving from Wi-Fi to mobile data gives you a different public IP, from a different provider.
- Restart your router. Many providers hand out a new address when the router reconnects, though some keep the same one for weeks.
All six methods, compared, with steps for each device: how to change or hide your IP address.
After connecting a VPN, check this page again: the address and provider should change. Then run the DNS leak test and the WebRTC leak test to make sure nothing still goes around it. To check any other address, use the IP lookup; for just your provider or location, see What Is My ISP and What Is My Location. New to VPNs? Read what a VPN is and how it works.
